REAL FOOD philosophy

Everyone has something to say about what we should be eating these days. From paleo to vegan, low carb and keto, to plant based and eating your weight in grapefruit. Conventional wisdom will have you believing fat is the enemy, that grains are a staple, and that you need a billion supplements. What if I told you this was all a lie? Truth is one persons perfect can be another persons poison. There is far more to modern food than meets the eye. 

I think it helps to ask ourselves what food is to us. What is our relationship to it? What if we rid ourselves of the diet mindset and learned to love food for the nourishment it brings to our lives. We are fed by so many things. Trust me, as an elite athlete I learned the hard way that there is more to life than training like an olympian and eating like a monk. I was so focused on my workouts and what was on my plate that I didn’t realize how out of balance the rest of my life had become. I was in a relationship that didn’t serve me, working in a career that I wasn’t passionate about, and because I trained for hours a day, I had little time to spend with friends and family.

Then I realized this…

Think back to a time when you were passionately in love. Everything was exciting. Colors were vivid. You were floating on air. Your loves touch and shared feelings were enough to sustain you. You forgot about food and were high on life.

Remember a time when you were deeply involved in an exciting project. You believed in what you were doing and felt happy, confident, and stimulated. Time seemed to stop. The outside world faded away. It didn't even cross your mind that you hadn't eaten in hours and a friend had to come by and remind you that it was getting late.

Now, think of a time when you were not on your A game, your self esteem was low, and you were starving for food to feed your soul. There are times when we come home at night and look to the fridge, when all we really want is a hug or someone to talk to. No amount of food will satiate those cravings. 

The above examples demonstrate that everything in life feeds us. From Eastern to Western, ancient to modern, and everything in between, the food on our plate is secondary to healthy relationships, physical activity, a fulfilling career, a meaningful spiritual practice, etc, all of which satisfy the soul and your hunger for life.

When it comes down to the food on your plate, I like to look to our ancestors. Modern humans are sicker, more depressed, more disconnected than ever. Yet we've never had more diet this or sugar free that. What's the problem here? Well, its not real food. We didn't evolve with red dye #40, Sucralose, and refined vegetable oils. Our ancestors wouldn't even be able to pronounce the ingredients that most "food" contains these days. Heck, I can't most of the time!

Fad diets all promise miraculous results for your outward appearance-yet people continue to eat poorly, gain weight, and depend on magic pills, medications, and operations to maintain their health. All the while, they stumble through life not knowing what it is to be truly happy, content, confident, and in tune with their bodies. The grass will always be greener under someone else's feet.

Let me tell you this. The human body is an incredible piece of machinery. Intricately designed to function and thrive. The heart knows how to beat. The lungs know how to breath. We all possess the potential to not only look good naked, but to achieve optimal health, wellness, and happiness. It is our birthright to THRIVE. You are a masterpiece.

So now, its time for a reality check: their is no one-size-fits-all diet. No magic pill. We have to go back. Back to nature. Back to intuitive eating where you'll learn to build a new relationship with your body. Where you'll learn to honor and respect how truly incredible you are.

Think about it, no other creature is so far removed from its own instinctual programming as we humans have become. Elephants don't go to weight watchers, gazelles don't count calories, and tigers know they can't survive eating iceberg lettuce.

I have studied over 100 dietary theories and have integrated guidelines from many modalities ancient and new, from all over the world. What I have found is this...it's real food for the win. Every time. Food that can be hunted or gathered. Whole, unprocessed, unmodified, and unrefined. Food that has always been food. Not factory made products.

My goal as a health coach is to navigate you back to finding this simplicity found in nature. I believe in real food. Nutrient dense, sustainably grown, locally raised, and harvested. Food to nourish mind, body, and soul. Food to fuel your vitality. 

Once there, we'll start to blend the art of science, nature, and nutrition with the personal growth aspects of  fitness, mindset, and all the other components that generate a fulfilling life. You'll come to know your body and needs better than anyone else ever could and this will lead you on your path to life long optimal health and happiness.

Its time to get back. Back to nature.
